What makes a barrel food grade?
For a barrel to be food grade it must meet all FDA food grade plastic requirements and be properly marked with the corresponding stamp usually etched into the barrel, for us we offer only HDPE #2 stamped barrels.
What makes plastic unsafe?
Plastic can be created with a ton of different materials with different levels of leaching when heated, chemically reacted, UV exposed, or come into contact with moisture. This leaching is scientifically proven to be harmful to the health of humans and animals when consumed. These plastics are common and everywhere; that is why it is important to make informed buying decisions when choosing plastics for use for your family and animals. We only source FDA approved plastics through a reliable, identifiable, supply chain to give you the best second hand barrels on the market.
What can they be used for?
The uses are endless! But here are some common uses:
Rain Barrels, Animal Feeders, Waterers, Long-term Prepping/ Storage, Grain, Dust Collection, General Storage, Dry Bin, Hydroponics/ Aquaponics, Shipping Containers, Filtration Systems, Pond Pumps, Mixers, Sap/ Syrup Collection, Raised Garden Beds, Compost Bins.
How do you clean your barrels?
There is not one defined way to do this and It does depend on your intended use and comfortability level. For our family, food/ water use, we triple clean the barrels. First with a dish soap sponge scrub, then we spray a diluted bleach solution, let sit for 5 minutes, and finally a water rinse to remove any cleaner in the barrel before setting the barrel in the sunlight to dry out completely before using. This method has been trusted by us for years.
What should I look out for?
Be wary of other sellers! We have noticed a huge up-trend of sellers in our area who are attempting to mis-lead the public by selling barrels that have had dangerous chemicals, even acid in them as food grade! Getting bad barrels cheap, falsely advertising to make a quick, unethical buck. You will find these barrels to be “rinsed out”, “cleaned”, hiding their source, or missing labels. Do not buy from sellers that are showing red flags in how they sell their barrels! Ethical second hand barrel businesses exist! Do not be lured in by cheap priced barrels and put your family at risk.
Can chemical barrels be rinsed?
No,Chemicals/ Hazardous material change and/ or break down the structure and coating of the barrels and leach into the plastic. You won’t know the strength, or how long that chemical was active in the barrel to know how much damage was done. After rinsing you will still get those chemicals leaching back into your water/ food.
